Posted at 7:53 AM UTC on January 29, 2010
All of us at Climate Action Map are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Uwe Lorenzen, Co-Founder of Climate Action Map. Uwe was a good friend and colleague and his death has been a severe loss to all of us. Please read the statement below from United Cities and Local Governments.

It is with deep regret that the Presidency, World Secretariat and Members of United Cities and Local Governments have learned of the passing away of Uwe Lorenzen, Head of the European Union Department of Local Government Denmark.

A remarkably active member of the international movement of local and regional government networks, Uwe Lorenzen contributed greatly to the organization and success of the UCLG Executive Bureau and the Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit in Copenhagen last June 2009.

He held the respect and friendship of his colleagues, who wish to convey to his family and close friends, as well as to his partners and to the members of LGDK, their deepest sympathies and their support at this difficult time.
...

One of Uwe's last wishes was the succesful continuation and expansion of Climate Action Map. All of us here will do everything to live up to Uwe's wish. Uwe will be deeply missed by all of us.

Happy New Year
Posted at 9:48 AM UTC on January 14, 2010
Hello Climate Action Map supporters,
Here at Climate Action Map, we look forward to a new and exciting year. Our booth at the UN COP 15 Conference together with UN Habitat was a big success and new cities are joining every week. The outcome of COP 15 was unfortunately not what any of us had hoped for, but the lack of national and international action only emphasizes the need for local actions to be stepped up in 2010.

As of now we have 53 cities on 5 continents and over 1200 local climate solutions. We thank you for your support and we hope that 2010 will be just another exciting year.

If you wish to get daily updates on new cities and interesting please feel free to subscribe to our tweets at www.twitter.com/climatemap.

Today more than 40 cities around the world have listed their best practice climate initiatives and more are joining each week.
The Climate Action Layer has been launched just in time for the UN Climate Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen where government leaders from more than 100 countries are gathering along with 20.000 participants from non-profits to negotiate a global agreement to curb CO2 emissions. ClimateActionMap.org is presenting the map together with its partners from the US National League of Cities, Local Government Denmark and UN Habitat in order to highlight the importance of local government action in reducing CO2 emissions.

NLC Launches Climate Action Map as Free Tool for Cities
Posted at 4:42 AM UTC on December 08, 2009
Cities can now access a free online tool to help plan and showcase their climate and emissions reduction initiatives. The recent Congress of Cities and Exposition in San Antonio marked the official U.S. launch of the global initiative, Climate Action Map (www.ClimateActionMap.org). NLC is serving as the U.S. national partner organization.
The user-friendly website provides a global online platform for cities to place projects on the site’s map, essentially building a visually-appealing, virtual database. From green buildings to wind farms to LED streetlights, an endless variety of successful projects and policies are contained on the site. Local governments stand to benefit from sharing ideas with other cities, while also gaining a tool to graphically represent their climate programs to their own communities.
Climate Action Map was created to communicate to a global audience the thousands of local climate initiatives underway around the world. The mission of the site is to educate, inform and inspire governments at all levels, while also informing individual communities and the private sector. Read the full article.

UN Cop 15 begins Monday December 7
Posted at 9:16 AM UTC on December 05, 2009
I am currently sitting in San Francisco Airport waiting to board the plane to Copenhagen where we will present ClimateActionMap.org (Burning lots of Carbon in the process :( ). If you happen to come to the conference please come by and visit us at booth H-011D. Representatives from all our partner organizations will be there during the next two weeks.

If you are not able to join us please follow our tweets at www.twitter.com/climatemap or www.climateactionmap.org/news.

Both President Obama and the India's Prime Minister are scheduled to attend the conference so we may be closer to a political commitment/agreement than we thought just a few weeks back.

Thanks for your support and please keep spreading the word.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia has joined Climate Action Map
Posted at 7:31 AM UTC on November 21, 2009
Santa Cruz de la Sierra, commonly known as Santa Cruz, is the capital city of the Santa Cruz department in eastern Bolivia. The municipality's population was 1,528,683 inhabitants in 2006 (official estimate) and the urban population is 1,545,161 in 2008 (official estimate) which makes it the largest city in Bolivia.
In the municipality of Santa Cruz, the sanitation sector faces immediate challenges. The population is growing at an annual rate of over 6%. The sewerage coverage in the service area of the Cooperative of Public Services of “Santa Cruz” (SAGUAPAC) is only around 50%. This low rate of sewerage coverage poses immediate public health and environmental effects.  Gases generated by the current treatment facilities contaminate and carry unpleasant odors to the nearby residential areas. In addition, sewage infiltration into the city’s main aquifer will result, within a few years, in irreversible damage to the water supply. The situation demands an adequate technical solution.
Santa Cruz, Bolivia is part of the UN Habitat Cities in Climate Change Initiative

Samsø, Denmark's Official Energy Island is on the map
Posted at 7:30 AM UTC on November 21, 2009
Samsø is a small island of 114 square kilometers, located in the center of Demark.
The 4.100 inhabitants primary income is agriculture and tourism... and renewable energy.

The island is 100% self-sufficient with wind-generated electricity. About 70% of island heating needs are met with renewable energy, and the transportation energy consumption is 100% compensated by the electricity production from offshore wind turbines.

Samsø's CO2 balance shows that each inhabitant emits -4 tons CO2 a year.
The negative figure is obtained by widespread use of renewable energy on the island and by exporting electricity to the mainland from excess wind turbine power and thus reducing coal based power production.

Our newest city Savannah, Georgia won prize for revitalization
Posted at 9:49 AM UTC on November 17, 2009
The National League of Cities recognized the City of Savannah today with its highest honor for its innovative work revitalizing distressed neighborhoods.

New City on ClimateActionMap.org: City of Aalborg, Denmark
Posted at 7:53 AM UTC on October 28, 2009
The Municipality of Aalborg is the third largest in Denmark with a population of over 190,000 and a total area of 1.144 km2. Two acclaimed international documents on local sustainable development have taken form during conferences in Aalborg and bear the name of the city. These are the Aalborg Charter and the Aalborg Commitments respectively.
The Aalborg Charter was adopted in 1994 and contains a set of common visions and declarations of intent with regard to sustainable development. The City of Aalborg and the EU Commission took the initiative concerning the wording of the Aalborg Charter and were at the same time behind the establishment of the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign.

New features introduced: Video support and policy sharing
Posted at 10:16 AM UTC on October 22, 2009
YouTube Video Support We are excited to announce that we now support embedded videos from YouTube. You can add videos to your region information or any project. We believe that providing video footage from your city and/or your projects greatly improves the user experience.  Adding video is really simple. When you add or edit a project, all you have to do is to provide a name for the video and the Youtube URL.  For an example visit Lolland Municipality who provided a video to their region info window introducing visitors to the municipality. Go to www.climateactionmap.org and visit Lolland Municipality.

Share Your Policies and Plans Many of you have expressed interest in sharing policies and plans with other cities. To meet this request, we just implemented a simple way for you to link to your climate change related policies and plans. To add policies just sign in and go to "Edit Region" in the "Control Panel". There you will see a new tab called "Policies". Provide a name for each policy/plan, choose the category it falls under, and provide the URL to where the policy/plan is located (usually somewhere on your own website). Now your policy/plan will show up in your region information video on the map. If you want to see what policies other cities have, you can do so by going to www.climateactionmap.org/policies. You can sort the policies according to region, country, name, and category. As more policies are added, we will implement a more advanced search feature. If you have any feedback or comments on how to improve the policy feature feel free to contact us.

New City: Randers Municpality
Posted at 5:38 AM UTC on October 08, 2009

Where the Waterway meets the 13 Highways
Randers is known for the many access roads leading into the city, and it has engendered the popular saying, "Where the waterway meets the 13 highways." Randers has Denmark's only natural river harbour, and is situated on the banks of the River ’Gudenå’, about 6 miles (10 km) above its mouth in ‘Randers Fjord’. Randers is placed 111 miles (179 km) west-northwest of Copenhagen and is Denmark's 6th largest city with a population of 59,842.

Danish Frontrunner
Randers Municipality (pop. 94,250) occupies a particularly strong position in the fields of energy and climate. Over the past 25 years, Randers and environs has established itself as the Danish front-runner in the development of energy and environment friendly technologies.

One of the first serious electric car projects in Europe saw the light of day here with the development and production of a single-seater city car, the "Ellert", which was financed by the local community.

It was also here that Denmark's wind turbine adventure began. NEG Micon (later Vestas A/S) developed and produced large modern wind turbines. Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has its headquarters in Randers. At the Overgaard estate in Randers municipality one can visit Denmark's largest on-land wind turbine farm.

The development of environment and energy friendly trains has played a major role in Randers. The town's 60 year-old train factory (now Bombardier A/S) develops modern energy technology solutions to match the challenges of public transport.

New City on ClimateActionMap.org: City of Copenhagen, Denmark
Posted at 5:52 AM UTC on September 14, 2009
Copenhagen is focused on the climate. The city is energy efficient with our district heating system, while nearly 40% of our citizens cycle to work or their educational institution every day. The electricity-generating windmills, located in the sea outside the city, save 76,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Our vision is for Copenhagen to be the climate capital of the world, with a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2015 compared to 2005. We even want to become completely CO2-neutral by 2025 as the first capital in the world. We are looking for joint initiatives from municipalities, the business world and the citizens as well as close cooperation across international borders.
More than 30% of CO2 emissions in Copenhagen come from residential and other buildings. It is our goal that in the future all urban development projects will contribute to reducing Copenhagen’s total CO2 emissions, and that selected urban areas will become completely CO2-neutral.
City traffic is responsible for 20% of the city’s CO2 annual emissions ie, 518,000 tons. We will reduce private use of cars within the inner walls of the city of Copenhagen by offering people enhanced opportunities to walk, cycle or use public transport. We will incorporate new technology into solutions which reduce pollution from train, metro and busses.

New city: Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark
Posted at 6:39 AM UTC on September 04, 2009

Kalundborg is striving to become a green industrial city by 2020. Many remedies have already been taken and projects initiated with key players thereby bridging the often perceived antagonistic parameters featuring growth and sustainability.

Full-screenBeing the largest industrial cluster outside Copenhagen, projections about the future of Kalundborg are prosperous, facing increasing industrial investments amounting up to 1,6 bn euro within a decade. The gloomy downside however is the correlation between heavy industry and GHG emissions. It is paramount to Kalundborg Municipality to pursue a sustained growth rate as projected, however NOT at the expense of the environment.
